Sort Them Ducks Timed Skills Explained
Three abilities on a clock. Use them to unstick a costume, not to skip the shop.
Sort Them Ducks splits upgrades into passives and skills. Passives are always on: more carry, more speed. Skills are the three tricks preview writers listed: show the correct shelf, highlight duplicates of the duck you hold, and fill your inventory with that duck from the area around you. They run on timers so the game does not become a highlight reel with no walking.
Read this after upgrade order. If you buy skills first, you will still be a five-duck courier with a cooldown. If you buy them third, they feel like cheating in the kind way cozy games allow.
Reveal the correct shelf
Hold a duck whose costume argues with itself. Activate reveal. The shop points you at the sign that owns that name. This is the anti-confusion tool, not the anti-distance tool. Using it on every pirate trains you to stop reading HUD names, which makes you slower when the timer is down.
Good moments: first time you see a Tower color, a food duck that looks like a chef, a superhero that looks like a mascot. Bad moments: the opening pile when you should be learning two signs by walking.
Highlight matching ducks
The Steam page’s “highlight matching ducks” line. Copies of the held design light up so you can vacuum a family without scanning every hat. Combine it with aisle discipline from the walkthrough. Highlight is how you finish a neighborhood in one circuit.
It will not fix a mixed handful. If you hold a wizard and the highlight shows three wizards and you also carry two chefs, you still have a chef problem. Empty the wrong family first.
Fill inventory from hand
Auto-grabs nearby copies of the held duck until your slots fill. This is the closest thing the game has to a magnet. It is wonderful beside a theme pile and chaotic beside the spawn mountain. Aim it. Then go place. If FPS hiccups when a hundred ducks try to enter your pockets at once, that is a performance issue, not a skill bug.
Timer etiquette
Let the cooldown exist. The design wants you to play without the crutch so the shop still feels like your hands. Players who asked why some tidy-up games give achievements for making the game “less fun” are talking about this tension. You can 100% shelves without becoming a skill addict. You might want skills for confusing ducks and for late extras.
If a trophy seems to ask you to use abilities, do one dedicated session. Do not brick a cozy night because a challenge run exists.
After Patch 1 refunds
Ability progress had a save file of its own. The hotfix rebuilt it and refunded spend. Buy the same skills in the same order. They will work. If they do not, you are on known issues, not on a secret fourth skill.
When the timers feel natural, you can ignore this page. The shop is the teacher. Skills are the highlighter.
Skills on a second session
If you come back the next day and the timers feel weaker, you are not imagining a nerf — you are rusty at aiming them. Stand still, activate, then walk. Activating while sprinting through spawn wastes the clock on ducks you already understand. Save the bar for a costume you have already failed to name twice.
After the refund hotfix, buy reveal before highlight if you still get stuck on lookalikes, or highlight before fill-from-hand if your carry is already high and you are sweeping neighborhoods. That is the only “respec” the game offers: spend the refunded coins in the order this week’s pile actually needs. The planner will keep you from buying all three in a panic on the same menu visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions players ask after a long sorting session.
How many active skills are there?
Three headline timed skills: reveal shelf, highlight matches, and fill-from-hand. Everything else is mostly passive carry and movement.
Do skills last forever once bought?
You own them, but each use is timed. They are not always-on auras.
Which skill is best?
Reveal if costumes confuse you. Highlight and fill-from-hand if you already know the aisle and want speed.
Should beginners buy skills first?
No. Carry first. See upgrade order.
