Sort Them Ducks How to Reach High Places
Top planks are still in the shop. Jump, look fully up, and stop fighting the camera after zoom.
A Steam thread titled “How do I reach high places?” is the entire genre in one sentence. Sort Them Ducks fills a vertical store, not a tabletop. Some planks sit above a comfortable first-person eye line. If you only walk and look forward, those rows look decorative. They are not. Empty top slots will keep a category counter hungry even when the floor is spotless.
This is the dedicated how to reach page. Bindings live on Controls. Jump and crouch upgrades live on movement. If you still cannot see a duck, it may be missing rather than high — then use missing ducks.
Look up before you blame the spawn
Patch 1 explicitly let players look fully up and down. If you launched on day one and never updated, your pitch range might still feel like a visor. Update, then stand in front of a tall unit and crane. Category signs stay readable; the top plank often does not until the camera agrees to tilt.
Zoom can fight you. The same patch stopped zoom from leaving FOV stuck and stopped high FOV from clipping through walls. If the top shelf appears, then the camera pops inside the wood, back out of zoom and reset. You cannot place what you cannot see.
Jump is a sorting tool
Controller jump was broken at launch and restored in Patch 1. Keyboard jump should exist in the same move set. Use it as a short hop to bring the interact prompt onto the upper plank, not as parkour. Crouch first if the prompt keeps grabbing a duck on a middle shelf instead of the empty slot above. The food-shelf “through the back” bug is worse when the camera is between two units; stand in the aisle you mean.
Carry capacity matters here more than it looks. Climbing with one duck is slow. Climbing with a handful of the same family lets you fill a top row in one visit. That is another reason upgrade order puts carry first. Timed reveal-shelf helps if you cannot tell which tall unit is the right family from the floor. Do not spam it on every hop.
Practical sequence for a tall unit
- Confirm the HUD name matches the sign.
- Stand centered in the aisle, not inside the furniture.
- Look fully up. If the plank is empty, hop.
- Place, then hop again for the next slot instead of dropping back to the floor each time.
- If the prompt steals a placed duck from the far side, sidestep and retry.
- Tick the aisle on the checklist only after the top row is filled.
Steam Deck users should cap FPS before they start hopping. A stutter on takeoff is how people walk off a ledge into a pile they already sorted. Performance tools cover the cap and the Ryzen flash that makes looking at bright windows miserable while you try to aim a jump.
When high places are the wrong diagnosis
If every tall unit is full and the counter still wants one, you are back on the missing-duck loop. Towers, extras, and outside-the-shop spawns are not solved by jumping higher. If you cannot jump at all on a pad, update the game. If you can jump but the duck sits on a beam the interact never likes, respawn once and see whether it lands on the floor like a civilized toy.
The shop is supposed to feel cozy, not like a precision platformer. Use height in short bursts, then go back to filling mid rows where the loop sings. When the last top pirate is seated, the unit finally looks like the Steam screenshots — which is the whole point of reaching up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions players ask after a long sorting session.
How do I get ducks on the top shelf?
Look fully up (Patch 1), jump to bring the prompt onto the plank, and carry a handful of the same family so you are not hopping empty-handed.
Jump does nothing on my controller.
Update past Patch 1. That patch restored controller jump. Then check the bind in settings.
The camera clips into the shelf.
Exit zoom and avoid extreme FOV. Patch 1 fixed zoom leaving FOV stuck and high FOV clipping through walls.
I still cannot find the last duck.
Height is only one cause. Check missing ducks for Tower mix-ups, respawn, and counters that Patch 1 tried to fix.
